Show Spoiler

a5c7b9f00b When strange anomalies start to appear all over England, Professor Cutter and his team must track down and capture all sorts of dangerous prehistoric creatures from Earth's distant past and near future.
The original series (1-3) were very good, and I would advise watching them (especially series three). thought they had the odd minor issue, like Danny suddenly being able to fly a helicopter or no one reporting seeing a dinosaur walking the streets of wherever you let it slip because realistically the show would be boring if it was 100% realistic (lots of paper work)

But with its comebackseries four and five these issues became more obvious. I understand if they have had there budget Marjory cut but that does no mean the hire a seven-year-old for a script writers, for instance (in no particular order):

when mat is fighting a 'tree creeper' to save CGI cost he just waves a blade at a camera rather than actually fight it. (and this animal is the same size of a hyena but is fought off with a four inch knife? wtf?)

the writers make no attempt to go into the curiosity or shock that Emily (ruth Bradley) must be in to come from the Victorian era to modern day. Torchwood made a whole episode based on that!!

the writers COMPLETELY contradict themselves (or their predecessors) when it come to Helen (she is deadwell, can't they let a character go?) when she apparently tries to cause the post apocalyptic future by making a big anomaly that will apparently kill the world (the skip the detail on how)

Conor and abbey are the only people in both series having any sort of interesting relationship, which is then overused to the point of ridicule

they replace weapons which we are familiar with (normal bullet firing g36s) to 'laser tasers'

the new arc is rather gloomy

the computer technician and the head of security have a relationship which has the realism and maturitythe one in w.a.l.l.e (pixar)

they miss out any form of scientific data to the point that the physics in doctor who seems more likely

the new series is basically based at completely the wrong age-group, and I would not advise watching it unless you are 10 or under. they clearly didn't realise that 12 to 16 etc is the more profitable age group which the original series was aimed at. this is why there are so many angry primeval fans who don't like the new series, the producer forgot what age group he was aiming at (or just hired the director of trolls 2 to write the script).
When I first heard that ITV were going to have a new Saturday night drama featuring time travel and dinosaurs I immediately thought it was going to be a Doctor Who rip off; thankfully it managed to be quite different. That than having a time machine that enables the protagonists to travel between eras 'anomalies' appear at random locations and these acta gateway between eras that enables dinosaurs to come to the present and cause mayhem. An agency is set up to investigate the anomalies and deal with anything that comes through; this agency is lead by Professor of Palaeozoology, Nick Cutter, Zoologist Abby Maitland and science student Connor Temple. Over the course of the five series the agency changes quite a lot with new characters coming and going and a change in the time line leading to it becoming the Anomaly Research Centre (ARC) with a large complex without the hassle of having to show it developing!

The anomalies can lead to any time but inevitably whenever they go something dangerous will come through; almost always a large creature that quickly starts eating people! The creatures aren't the only danger though; Cutter's wife was lost in an anomaly several years before and now she has an agenda that is a danger to the team in particular and the Earth in general.

I didn't think I would enjoy this at first; and the first episode had enough silly moments that I almost gave up on it; I'm glad that I didn't thoughit soon improved and the characters grew on me. Douglas Henshall did a good jobCutter; bringing some seriousness to the proceedings; it is a shame that his character didn't stay with the show till the end. Hannah Spearritt and Andrew Lee Potts were fun to watchAbby and Connor; the former is clearly intended to appeal to the male viewersshe was frequently to be seen in her undies in early series… there was a plot driven reason for this but it is obvious that the real reason is the creators thought she'd boost ratings! Its Saturday evening timeslot ensured that there was nothing too gruesome or scary in it although it certainly has some moments that might frighten some viewers; this was helped by some great CGI dinosaurs. There is a decent amount of humour to be enjoyed too; frequently provided by Ben Miller's character James Lester; head of ARC, at first I thought the character was annoying buttime passed he came to be became one of my favourites.

I'd certainly recommend this to anybody wanting some enjoyable sci-fi action who wants something other than aliens, robots and space battles. It can probably be enjoyed by anybody ten or older although what is too scary and what is exciting will obviously vary with the child. Just don't compare it to Doctor Who; it is probably better described'Jurassic Park' with some time travel!

No, because the BBC stepped in with funding. ITV originally decided it couldn't afford to make any more series, but BBC Worldwide has stepped in with funding for Series 4 and 5.
